Biography

What made you pick this particular course/ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø?
I have always been interested in the care sector and had previously achieved diplomas in health and social care. At the time I applied for my degree, I was a carer in a nursing unit for the elderly with dementia and always felt I wanted to develop my love for people. I had always wanted to go back to further education, but as I was married with a mortgage this didn’t feel plausible. Being so close to home meant that I can still be with in my house and family unit but also achieve my academic goals.

What were your highlights at ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø?
I enjoyed group discussions and debates. I felt it was a very important part of my learning journey and that I was able to see multiple perspectives on different topics. I also really enjoyed the classroom setting. It was nice to be in a room full of people who were on a similar journey but with multiple different goals.

Did you undertake any work experience throughout your studies?
Yes I did, I volunteered and still do as a brownie guide leader. This is more of a hobby to me now and I meet with my troop every Monday. I also did work placement in the Homelife office alongside the management team. I think working in the Homelife office environment opened me up to a more logistical way of approaching care as I’d always been hands on. It allowed me to see the amount of paperwork and planning that must go into sourcing and approaching each care package and how everyone’s needs should be met.

What do you plan to do when you leave ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø?
Since graduation, I became self employed as a PA and now also working for DCC as an adult social care assessor with the view of eventually furthering my education to be a social worker.

Any advice for someone thinking of choosing the same course as you?
Absolutely do it, don’t think twice. It’s an experience that I will treasure for the rest of my life and has opened up so many opportunities for me. I have also made life-long friends due to this experience also.
